Panic Attack Medication

Panic Attack Medication Is Part of a Comprehensive Treatment Plan

There are several types of panic attack medication that seems to be part of an overall treatment plan. A treatment program can only be developed once the type of anxiety disorder has been accurately diagnosed. This is where the problem can be truly difficult.

Unlike physical diseases, mental disorders and conditions are by nature a complex mix that can include both mental and physical components. To make an accurate diagnosis even more difficult, the mental issues may not be based on current situations are reality but on past experience. Emotional damage done years ago can also play a role in the development of many mental illnesses, including anxiety disorders and panic attacks.

It's only after an accurate diagnosis of your specific condition is made that an effective panic attack treatment plan can be fashioned with the help of a qualified clinical psychologist. Anxiety is a complex combination of feelings that includes fear, worry, and sometimes even terror that can result in very physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat and hyperventilation.

Panic seems to be an extension of many of the anxiety disorders that have been identified by modern psychology and psychiatry. Although panic attacks are not part of every anxiety disorder, they are very common.

One of the most popular panic attack medications is a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Products like Valium and Xanax have a sedative effect that can lower the intensity of panic symptoms, thereby allowing better control. The negative to these drugs is that they can be very habit-forming. It's possible that even with just a few weeks of using this medicine, a person can become addicted. Although effective, benzodiazepines must be used with caution in extreme care.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) also seem to be a popular drug for the treatment of various anxiety disorders. I've not been able to find any clear proof that SSRI medicines like Zoloft and other of the more popular anti depressant pharmaceuticals are particularly effective or even highly recommended for the treatment of panic attacks.

Another type of pharmaceutical drug, MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOI'S) are antidepressants that work at a different level. These are some of the older medications used to treat a variety of anxiety disorders. Again however, there isn't a lot of information that suggests that these are effective in the treatment of panic.

The MAOI class of meds are difficult to maintain is a long-term regimen due to their interactive affects with many medications, foods and liquids.

Understand that only a qualified clinical psychologist or medical practitioner experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of panic and anxiety disorders can recommend any specific medication or treatment plan.

Although articles such as this are a good start for basic information, your health is too important to trust the information freely available on the Web. Take the time to better understand your condition than seek the help of a qualified professional that can help you overcome panic attacks or anxiety.
