The severity of panic attacks, not unlike depression and other anxiety disorders varies from person to person. While some folks suffering with panic disorder may have serious and debilitating attacks that are uncontrollable, some have and frequent episodes.
One of the characteristics of panic attacks is a feeling of being out of control. A person's reaction to that feeling can work to limit the the severity and length of time the attack may happen. But while many people claim there is little a person can do when panic attack symptoms strike, panic anxiety has been successfully treated with cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT for years. At least to me, this suggests that some mental gymnastics can be done to limit the severity of the attacks.
One of the most common subcategories of anxiety disorder that have panic attack symptoms is agoraphobia. Agoraphobia is a fear of places are situations which might place a person in an embarrassing are difficult position. Severe cases of this disorder can lead to a person becoming a recluse just to stay away from public places or anywhere people may gather.
Less severe cases of agoraphobia have been known to limit careers in the business world. This is because a person may be so terrified of public speaking that they are unable to attend business meetings are give even basic presentations in front of colleagues.
Imagine not being able to walk down the street for fear of having to interact with a neighbor or a stranger, who may pass by. This can mean an inability to be able to walk the dog, go to the supermarket, attend a child's school presentation or play, or even be out in public at all.
The fear in all these cases can be so great as to trigger a panic attack.
A qualified clinical psychologist trained in working with panic and anxiety disorders can help develop a treatment plan to keep the fears and panic attacks from becoming even worse. Panic attack medication is also available to help deal with the symtoms.
