Anxiety Medicine Is Not a Cure-All or without Risk!
While one of the most popular classes of prescription drugs for the treatment of anxiety disorders is extremely popular, they are not without risk. SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors were considered a major breakthrough to treat generalized anxiety disorder in many other anxiety types.
Many people suffering from various anxiety disorders will find themselves at one time or another on SSRI prescription drugs. These medicines are marketed under the names Paxil, Zoloft, LexaPro as well as Prozac.
The problem with this class of anxiety medicine is that it's not without risk and in many cases given to the people do to our expectation of a pharmaceutical solution to any medical type problem. I'm not suggesting that these medicines should not be used only that the potential benefit should be heavily weighed against the risks.
Remember that anxiety disorders can be worry and concern about a class exam or giving a public presentation, to an absolute debilitating fear to keep someone from continuing a normal life.
Another consideration is the frequency of the symptoms. Patients who experience occasional, relatively mild anxiety attacks may not be the best candidates for anxiety medicine prescriptions.
The risk of side effects, though minimal, should still be considered before deciding if these medications are for you. The side effects may include difficulty breathing, swelling, tremors and heart palpitations, seizures, confusion rapid heartbeat, lack of coordination, dizziness, sleepiness, insomnia, sexual dysfunction and the list continues. Just remember that depression and anxiety medication isn't for everyone.
Depending on the severity of the condition, it would be wise to consider all alternative treatments along with anxiety medicines. It may be possible to obtain the release desired using natural remedies and exercise along with relaxation techniques such as yoga.
Be sure to check with your medical or psychological professional working with you on your treatment plan to see if SSRIs are right for you.
