Anxiety Medication

Anxiety Medication Is Not a Cure for Any Anxiety Disorder

There was a time when those of us who suffer from anxiety and depression had few choices in the way of medications. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) were some of the older types of drug therapy recognized as effective in the treatment of depression and symptomatic anxiety. MAOIs were particularly effective in the more common atypical type anxiety depression and raised mood levels in many patients.

Although effective, the potential side effects caused by various drug and food interactions make this class of medicine to drugs of last resort after the newer, more SSRI drugs have failed. Due to the efficacy of these Monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants, research has been ongoing to study the effects of the drug using different delivery systems such as an external package instead of a pill form.

This allows the anxiety panic depression medication to bypass the stomach and intestines and thereby may lower the danger of food interactions making these drugs safer to use. It's possible that using a transdermal delivery system these anxiety mood medications may once again gain a following.

Research has enabled many new anxiety medications to be used and have been developed for treating anxiety disorders as well as some specific forms of psychotherapy. These two methods of using medications as well as therapies have been found to be quite effective and the choice of which to use rests entirely on the shoulders of the patient and his or her doctor as well as on the particular type of anxiety disorder.

The current crop of mood altering medications are known as Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRI's. These drugs are a class of antidepressant medications that have been found effective in the treatment of depression, and many anxiety disorder types including panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorders.

A physician or a psychiatrist typically prescribes depression anxiety panic medication and often works closely with other mental health professionals involved in your treatment like clinical psychologists. The anxiety panic medications provide a much more immediate relief to the patient while the long term anxiety control treatment plan is being implemented by the psychologist.

While any depression and anxiety panic medication can provide temporary relief it is by no means a cure by itself. The root cause of the anxiety attacks, must be addressed. Although causes are risk factors of depression and anxiety symptoms varies by person-to-person, here's a short list of potential risk factors.

1. Environmental considerations. Stress relating to interpersonal relationships, or even network can trigger anxiety and panic.

2. Personality elements and self-esteem issues. A person who sees themselves as a victim or powerless can view the world is a dangerous and threatening place, thereby triggering anxiety worry and fear.

3. Brain chemistry. Some studies have suggested that in and balanced in chemicals located in the brain such as serotonin and epinephrine may contribute if not trigger anxiety attacks

4. Your relatives. While anxiety types of disorders may run in families, there is little in the way of solid research to prove this point. It's currently unclear whether common anxiety in a family unit is is caused by heredity or other environmental factors that are not evident.

Lastly, trauma can trigger anxiety, which may take years to overcome no matter what medication is used. There are also herbs that are claimed effective for anxiety attacks and to alter a person's mood. Although extremely popular there is little in the way of scientific research that validates that herbal remedies are effective in treating anxiety, mood swings or phobias.
