Depending on the severity and frequency of the anxiety or panic attacks that should be considered for treatment, some anti-anxiety drugs have been known to quickly diffuse oncoming panic and anxiety attacks.
So, GOOD NEWS!
There are many different classes of anxiety medications and these include antidepressants for anxiety disorders, anti-anxiety medications as well as other medications such as beta blockers like propanolol
and NOT SO GOOD NEWS
As far as the anti-anxiety medications are concerned, high potency benzodiazepines such as Xanax can work very quickly to relieve symptoms and do not have the side effects of many of the anti-depression medication available today.
The negative however is that a person taking anti-anxiety drugs in the benzodiazepines class is at risk for drug dependence with drowsiness as a very common side effect.
So the question of should these medications be used as one that can only be answered by you and your doctor. Many people who do not have a predisposition to addiction can use these drugs to control panic and anxiety attacks over many years. Others, due to their personality or nature may not be able to manage being on these medicines without an increase addiction risk.
The issue of drowsiness should not be minimized. This side effect effectively eliminates driving or operating equipment or machinery and using these drugs. This means that these medicines are of limited value to an anxiety patient who suffers worry or panic attacks during their daily routine
These anxiety medications also can result in the user developing a tolerance that requires increased dosage to achieve the same affects. An anxiety medication can really help with the symptoms.
For short-term use however, this class of depression and anxiety panic medication can deliver fast relief.
Another anti-anxiety medication is Buspirone, which is a member of a class of drugs that are known as azipirones which is a newer anti-anxiety medication used to treat GAD or general anxiety disorder. Again, one may suffer side effects such as drowsiness, headaches and nausea.
Check with your doctor or health care professional to see if these drugs are appropriate to treat your anxiety disorder symptoms.
