Everyone feels "blue" or unhappy during particularly difficult events or parts of their life. Actually, if a person DOESN'T exhibit at least some of the signs of depression during those difficult life events, this by itself may indicate a serious mental health challenge.
These feelings of inadequacy or unhappiness are not something that anyone can decide to ignore or change through forceful thought. Rather, it's important to realize that one cannot "will" their way to a state of mental healthiness anymore than they can speak themselves a cure for cancer.
This isn't to say that mental attitude is not important. Rather, it's a recognition that many people, especially those suffering from anxiety depression are unable to just move on and can become trapped in the depressive state without medical treatment.
Many people, almost 15 million in the U.S alone experience some level of depression. Many of us actually are depressed and don't recognize the symptoms.
Things like waking up tired after a full nights sleep. Although the medical community is currently focusing on "sleep apnea" an emotional cause like anxiety or depression may be at fault. This isn't to say that a single bad nights sleep is evidence of depression.
How about turning even more introverted? There are some people, like myself, that actually prefer not to be with people. This is a normal condition for me and I've been like this as long as I can remember. It's not that I don't enjoy people, it's just that the level of involvement takes away from the things I like to do. That's not to say that I don't enjoy the company of anyone. I have my family and a close circle of friends that I truly enjoy socializing and being with on a day to day basis.
If however you have a person who was gregarious and outgoing but has turned into a hermit preferring to be alone, this is a symptom of depression if ongoing for more than about 2 weeks.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) -- A commonly prescribed class of drugs for treating depression. SSRIs work by stopping the reuptake of serotonin, an action that allows more serotonin to be available to be taken up by other nerves.
Bulimia nervosa (also called bulimia) -- A condition characterized by binge eating followed by extreme measures to undo the binge (often vomiting).
Paranoid personality disorder -- People with this disorder are often cold, distant and unable to form close, interpersonal relationships. Often overly suspicious of their surroundings, people with paranoid personality disorder generally cannot see their role in conflict situations and often project their feelings of paranoia as anger onto others.
