Depression may be the key the unidentified epidemic in our society. Depression pain may also be a key to what's really bothering us as a society. According to the Edmonton Sun, almost 500,000 thousand Canadian workers experienced depression to the point of it interfering with the ability to get work done. A 2002 Canadian Community Health Survey suggested that about 4% of workers 25-64 had suffered from depression at one time during the previous 12 months.
This is interesting given the fact that depression hurts are not the same thing as simply feeling blue or down for a day. Although we all go through those periods of quiet introspection and sadness, depression is much more chronic.
The survey offered that people most prone to depression were also the tame who worked night or evening shifts. It was also interesting to note that people in sales or service were also identified as being people who had more depression tendencies than others. The causes of anxiety and depression however are as varied as the people who suffer with the disorder.
Causes of Anxiety and Depression
I believe the cause of anxiety depression is at least partially driven by the quiet introspection or thinking time some people seem to have. Although very few people identify themselves as being depressed when mental and physical activity is high, Depression may be driven by searching for larger meaning that cannot be filled with physical things.
Depression is a lot like being cast out on a sea of despair in a small boat with no provisions and no means to navigate.
Nearly eight out of 10 workers who answered the survey said they suffered depression that interfered with their ability to work. In addition, 20% identified their depressed state as being very severe. They reported depression impacted their performance at work for an average of 32 days in the previous 12 months. Left to itself, people may end up prgressing to panic attack type symptoms.
If the problem is seasonal depression, that is, caused by a lack of sunlight, there are ways to combat the problem. This may address the issue of people working the night shifts having depression symptoms. The study however validates other research that depression hurts job performance, time management, concentration, teamwork and overall output.
Treatment for Depression and Anxiety
If the depression can be linked back to the night working hours, it's a simple task to replace lighting with ones that more closely mimic sunlight. By giving people at night more sunlight, the depression symptoms should naturally moderate.
For others, those that are under depressions spell because of circumstances or situations, there's depression medications that can help control the symptoms though they don't provide a cure per se. The real anxiety and depression cure may be the need for justice and balance in ones life and society.
