Depression Anxiety Disorder | ||
Depression Anxiety Disorder Is Very Common It's been estimated that close to one half of American employees are under persistent or excessive stress and anxiety throughout their daily lives. Almost 25% report having used prescription medications to manage stress, lack of sleep, nervousness and other symptoms typically identified with both anxiety and depression. According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America however, only about 9% of working the adults have been professionally diagnosed with any type of anxiety disorder.
The first reason would be stigma. While we've moved beyond looking down on people for a variety of illnesses and diseases, mental health issues are still viewed by many as suspect. This is no doubt due at least in part to the second reason. Physical depression is real for millions of people suffering with the illness. Which is that these symptoms for many mental disorders can also be very normal and healthy responses depending on the circumstances and situation. Almost everyone has the majority of the symptoms at one time or another. So someone suffering with anxiety or depression cannot share the feelings as many simply do not understand. A third we reason could be our view of ourselves. Mental illness is still considered a weakness, and not a physical problem. This is supported by the fact that many of the most common mental disorders are extremely difficult to accurately diagnose. Treatment is also not a clearly identified path. Many of us raised in an immediate gratification society expect that treatment for this condition should be easily outlined and followed. Unfortunately, due to the complexities of this condition, there are a variety of treatment programs, strategies and medications that can all be used with no one treatment program being effective for everyone. Finally, the psychological community is not unified on the direction of treatment or even the identification of the disorder. So in the end, we as a nation suffer in silence.
